Best Adjustable Dumbbells

The Ultimate guide to adjustable dumbbells

Home gym equipment has been a popular industry for many years. Some people but these equipments to build a complete home gym, which allows for fullblown workout sessions. Others simply get a cople of weight and use them as an alternative to going to the gym, every now ans then. No matter what category you fall in, adjustable dumbells should form part of your must-have workout gear. The three main reasons for this are:

[wpsm_list type=”check”]

  • As the name implies, they are adjustable meaning you can fit the weight of the dumbbell according to your needs
  • Dumbells can be used for a wide selection of exercises, making them the preferred choice for a home gym.
  • They don’t take a lot of space

Regular dumbbells are the ones you find in the gym. They are not adjustable and that is why you have endless rows of dumbbells. The gym needs to provide weight for the skinny girls and the heavy bodubuilders, hence the reason for all the different dumbbells. It’s nice to have this selection at the gym, as if they only had adjustable dumbbells, people would have to spend time, switching weight on and off – this simply wouldnt be effective from a time perspective. However, when you are at home, you are the only one working out, and the story is completely different. Here, adjustable dumbbells is the perfect choice. But with that being said, which adjustable dumbbells are the best one? There are a lot of different ones being sold, and most them hyped as being the best thing on the market.

I have personally used CAP Barbell for a years and they have done a brilliant job! I highly recommend these. However, there are other alternatives on the market, and in this post I will try to compare some of them so you can make an informed decision and purchase the ones that fits your style the best.

Here you will find a comparison of the three best adjustable dumbbell alternatives (in my opinion). Mind you, that you can read the individual reviews for each dumbbell type, in order to find additional information. But before we get to the details, let me just cover the typical issues ralated to adjustable dumbbells, and what qustions you should ask before you make a purchase.

ADJUSTABLE DUMBBELLS – SHORTCOMINGS AND THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

Along with any personal preferences, there are a couple of certain points you should think about, before purchasing a set of adjustable dumbbells. Below I have highlighted the most commonly raised issues and concerns people have when buying adjustable dumbbells.

[wpsm_list type=”bullet”]

  • Price: You want a set that comes at a fair price.
  • Quality: You don’t want to gamble on quality.
  • Wobble: Wobbling weight can affect exercises adversely.
  • Weight Range: Max weight on the dumbbell should leave plenty of room for you to increase from your current level.
  • Increments: Lowe increments allow for more precise weight control
  • Dimensions: Large dumbbells makes you less flexible and can potentially delimit performance of certain exercises.
  • Smell: Yeah the smell can get bad…
  • Grip: does the handle allow for a good grip
  • Material: Very related to quality and grip. What is the dumbbell made from?
  • Ease of use: Can collars be pressed / turned on, without tools?
  • Storage: Is the set sold with a rack for storage / storage cage?
  • Additional Weights: Can you buy additional / more weights

CAP BARBELL 40-POUND ADJUSTABLE DUMBBELL SET WITH CASE

CAP-Barbell-Dumbbells review

[wpsm_titlebox title=”Verdict” style=”3″]A good and option for the newbie, where 40 pound goes a long way[/wpsm_titlebox]

I got myself this set years ago, and it’s been working perfectly since day one. No rust, easy to adjust (and no tools needed), and has a cool / raw kind of look to it. There are, in my opinion, two downsides to CAP Barbell Adjustable dumbbell.

You can adjust it to a max of 40 pounds. This was perfect when I was a teenanger, but these days are long gone. 40 pounds simply dont cut it anymore. The CAP Barbell adjustable dumbbells has metal handles, which might be good from an ergonomic perspective, but the grip isn’t the best. A couple of gym gloves will solve this easily though.

A set of CAP barbell adjustable dumbbells comes with two handles of 5 pounds each, four 2.5-pound plates, four 5-pound plates, 4 collars, and a plastic storage case. This means that the increments are 2.5 pound up to the first 10 pounds, giving that you only use one handle. After this, you are left with 5 pound increments, which might be a shortcoming to some folks out there, as well. Note that you get a total of 40 pounds, but 10 of these pounds are from the handles themselves, meaning that if you use all weight on one handle, you can only push it to 35 and not 40. There is however, room for additional weight which can be bought if necessary.

There is a rubber trim on the collar, so you don’t have any wobble from the weights when lifting.

Finally, the weights are iron plates. I know some people prefer a rubber cover, so a drop on the floor won’t do any damage. Personally, I like iron plates better.

The price for a set of CAP Barbell adjustable dumbells will cost you a total of $49.99 which is a really really good price, compared to the other options.

This set of adjustable dumbbells can be considdered the best rated adjustable dumbbells over at amazon. The actual truth is, that there are a couple of other brands rated higher than the bowflex set, but that is based on far less reviews. The current actual score of the bowflex selecttech 552 is 4.8 out of 5 and that is based on a whoppnig 2,235 reviews!

If we, in comparison, look at the best rated set of adjustable dumbbells, that would be the Ironmaster 45 lb Quick-Lock Adjustable Dumbbell System. This set has a rating of 5 out of 5, but it's based on a total of only 9 reviews.

With that being said, I think there is no doubt, that the bowflex selectTech 552 adjustable dumbbells is probably one of the best deals you can make, if you are looking for a good set of adjustable dumbbells. There are however, certain things you should keep in mind. But let's first take a look at the details of these dumbbells. Here goes.

The two main downsides to the bowflex adjustable dumbbells are, the size and the limited max weight for each dumbbell. Personally, I don't mind the size so much, but some people might find them a bit large. The max weight however, is an issue. I am beyond this level for most exercises. It's fine for single days where I dont bother going to the gym, but as an everyday alternative to the gym, 52 pounds wont cut it. However, for a lot of people, 52 pound goes a long way. This is very relative to where you are, and your goals going forward.

Luckily, for us who needs heavier weights, we can get BOWFLEX® SELECTTECH® 1090I DUMBBELLS which goes up to 41 kg - more on this later

Besides from this, I cannot think of any other shortcomings to these adjustable dumbbells. They look awesome, are extremely easy to adjust with no need for any tools and they don't take up much space. There is seemingly a rubber grip on the handle which is my prefered choice, and based on most reviews, people tend to agree that the grip is ergonomic and good.
