Assault from MusclePharm (New 2016 version: Review)

A new version of the popular pre-workout assault, from the company MusclePharm has been released. Actually, it has been out for quite a while, I just didn't have a chance to get around the product before now. The former version of Assault was in my opinion, a very solid pre-workout supplement. You can read my review here: Assault from MusclePhafrom. I also wrote a short post, comparing the former version of Assault with Assault Black. But let's get back on track, with today's review of the new version of Assault.

First of all, it should be noted that I havent personally tested this pre-workout. I did use the former version and I loved it, but I am yet to give this version a go. Hence this current review is based on solely on supplement facts and not on any personal experience; and based on the initial looks of things, this new version does look like a downgrade compared to the former version. More on this later. Let's

Assault’s pre-workout formulation is the most advanced and complete pre-workout system on the market. Precision-engineered to give athletes the ultimate performance advantage over the competition. New Assault - Supplement Facts

Beta-Alanine is a superstar substance from a bodybuilding perspective and one of my personal favorites. 2,000 mg is the sweet spot for me. Unfortunately we get a bit less than that, here. See this post or more information on Beta Alanine, and this post if you ever had any doubts on the effects from Beta Alanine. The short version is that beta-alanine works and is safe.

Betaine Anhydrous

This is an amino acid (which is also known as Trimethylglycine), or more specifically, it is composed of the amino acid glycine with three methyl groups (tri-methyl) bonded to it has been fairly well studied and shown to help enhance strength, power and muscle mass through boosting your muscle protein synthesis, as well as promoting fat loss. Most studies showing benefit from a performance enhancing perspective is with individuals using around 2.5 grams daily. Here we get 1.5 gram per serving.

Creatine Monohydrate

Creatine helps to increase the formation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).This helps to provide energy to the body’s cells. Bodybuilders are mainly interested in this as creatine provides energy to muscle cells. If you supplement with this stuff, it will enable you to enhance your workout sessions by increasing strength and power output. I will also speed up the recovery after a finished workout session. These are the main reasons why it is such a popular substance among bodybuilders and in the fitness and sports world. However, keep in mind that creatine is not only used by bodybuilders. Supplementing with this wonder is likely to increase your performance in any kind of psychical activity, but it is also often used as a substance in nootropic supplements as it is believed to provide neuroprotection which should be a result of energy provided to brain cells. Here we actually get the 3 grams, which is the typical and normally recommended dosage (after the initial loading phase).

Taurine is know to have mood enhancing effects, ability to lower cortisol levels, and it is believed to helps prevent oxidative stress induced by exercise. From a pre-workout perspective, this is often promoted as a focus enhancing substance. It is a very common ingredient in pre-workout supplements and there is a good reason for this; it comes with a wide range of benefits. We typically see it dosed around 500 to 3,00 mg. Quite a gap there, but this clearly is a substance with shattered opinions on the proper dosing. Here we get a total of 1,000 mg. Good stuff!

Glycine is a dietary amino acid that serves as both a constitutional amino acid and as a neurotransmitter/neuromodulator. There is some evidence that supplementation with this amino acid will improve cognition and reduce fatigue. In addition to this, it has been shown to help control blood sugar levels. You also get Glycine from fish, meat and various dairy products.

Caffeine Anhydrous

The good old caffeine at a low but justified dosage. We all know what this stuff does, but just in case you have been you have been living under a rock, here is the short version: It will give you a physical and mental energy boost.

This is done in different ways, for one by boosting the effects of serotonin, acetylcholine and dopamine. It also blocks adenosine receptors and increase the release of catecholamines. All in all this allows your body to send more blood to your muscles, release sugar for energy and make your heart beat faster.

300 mg might be a bit too much for some people and is likely to make you jittery. The typical dosage tends to be closer to 200 mg and that is my personal sweet spot. 100 mg is a low dose compared to other pre-workout supplements. Here we are right in the middle with a total of 250 mg which I think is the perfect dosage for most people out there.

ALCAR has been researched on extensively for a variety of performance and cognitive enhancement capabilities. It is used in NOOpump for its cognitive functions: it has been shown to enhance cognitive functions in people with cognitive decline. In addition to this it helps the body absorb L-carnitine – which helps you to break down fat and turn it into energy.

Verdict on the new Assault from MusclePharm

Based soley on the supplement facts, I would prefer the former version. The mix in this is, in my oppinion, a downgrade; there is a lack of pump enhancing substances, some of the substances are underdosed, and there isnt really a whole lot to up the energy either. However, I guess the idea behind from MusclesPharm's perspective, is that this PWO should be stacked with their new Nitric Oxide boosting supplement VasoSport. Combining these two will clearly do a lot more than just Assault on it's own. But we used to get it all, just from a scoop of Assault.
